Where the gains come is by taking breaks. Digging is hard work. The people digging can work faster and then take breaks to rest. For a ditch this size, you can probably get half the people working at once. They can dig straight down for most of the way, if you don't mind re-scooping the spoil to move it away.

As a cynical engineer, I'd say it will still take 10 days but cost 10 times as much.

Im not much of a Simpson,s fan but I will try and obtain the episode as well as spread the word .. :-)

Another thing to keep in mind is the 5 Whys.

Just because a modification has been requested. Doesn't necessary mean that's what they were trying to achieve. You have to get to the route cause by asking questions.

Like Erik said everything is possible but don't just do because you were asked.

Don't forget "Just Say No".

But don't fool anyone to say that it should be easy just to say no! Especially new consultants/programmers who know that "everything is possible" will sometimes be carried away by a requirement from a customer which they think could be "fun" to develop. Even if they know that there could be better solutions...
